How the PVMI was born

RETC is proud to present the annual PV Module Index initiative, a yearly compilation of reliability, performance, and quality indices generated by RETC with leading PV module manufacturers.

RETC has created and continued to improve its annual PV Module Index (PVMI) report so that the published findings focused on:

  • Creating a report that is free and accessible to all

  • Providing specific, data-backed findings

  • Reporting noteworthy performance and trends

  • Objectively highlighting PV manufacturers’ accomplishments & showing who is best at manufacturing product in the industry

Most PV industry reports feature a ranking system for “top performers” in which readers incorrectly assume that every product that a manufacturer makes is high-achieving. In competing reports, being a “high achiever” doesn’t guarantee that the manufacturer is able to make consistently good products. A manufacturer or product’s appearance on a typical report’s ranking could be based on just one criterion or the product could fail 90% of all the tests but do amazingly well on one test and still appear in that ranking. To meet RETC’s bar of being one of the “highest achievers”, the lab data has to demonstrate high-quality, reliability, and performance in all aspects.

As you review the test data presented in the PVMI Report, please bear in mind that the goal of comparative and accelerated testing is never to vilify a specific product, technology or manufacturer while endorsing another. The goal of the PV Module Index Report is not to dictate module selection criteria, but rather to empower project stakeholders to identify, quantify and mitigate technical risks associated with specific applications.
